HOW TO PLAY:
Colliding with blue asteroids to engage "Pheonix Mode" resulting in a momentary death before being reconstructed by the pure power of the blue asteroids.
Mining Ships:
Enemy mining ships will also be mining asteroids for shards, destroying them to gain extra shards, or avoiding them to play it safe.
Don't get too close to them or they might try and come after your shards too.
Creation process:
I created this game over the weekend as an entry into the 2022 GameDev.TV Game Jam.
The GitHub Repo I created is publicly available and you're welcome to clone and give it your own personal remix.
(I'm also happy to give tips if needed, leave a comment and I'll reply ASAP!)
Personally "Asteroids" used to be one of my favorite old-school games and I drew inspiration from it to create this quick, fun, space shooter ... with my own personal twist to match the GameJam theme.
You need to die to score points!
For everyone outside the GameJam, let me know what you think, and if you enjoyed it, please consider donating to my other project Super Space Pirate or share my game to help support my work.
This game was created with Game Maker Studio 2 using GML.

I really like the style and playablity of your game.
A bit like the Atari retro remakes of the 90s, but on steroids.
I'm not much of a high score junkie, but it's kind of additive actually :) Great work!
I never really liked the original Asteroids or games inspired by it, mostly due to the clunky controls, so it says something that I had fun. Adding mouse controls really made the movement experience smooth.
My "Ooooh" moment was realizing that each life could get me only 10000 points from shards and I needed 50000 points to win. 20000 points were missing?? That's where the genius of the blue squares come in. My first impression was that the whole shard gimmick was just to fulfill the theme topic but it's important when and where you die to maximize the post mortem points.
For some reason when I was close to 50k and died for the third time I got 3 new lives. Is that a bug or a feature I failed to notice?
The graphics and sound effects are positively retro.
I'll see to check out your other games at a later date. Thanks for the fun and all the best ^_^
Retroiffic! I don't know that I've ever played the original Asteroids but this was really fun! At first I felt sort of invincible, the cubes weren't attacking me or anything so I didn't think I'd be able to die unless it was on purpose. And then I went a bit too fast and carelessly... 💥
The second time I was cautious and managed to get 40300 points by avoiding any crashes until my shards were full, which left me confused. Luckily someone else had asked about this, so knowing the trick I was able to win on my
thirdfourth try!The core game play is very good as it is, I'm sure people who are better at this sort of game than I am would be able to zoom around faster and safer. I did a lot of coasting and avoided the edges of the level. Even though I could tell the blue cubes were different, and rarer, I don't think I would have realized their purpose on my own.
Other than that, you could easily add any number of things to increase complexity, powerups or different targets or even static obstacles. Have you ever played Gridwars? This reminds me a lot of that, and it uses different shapes for enemy behaviours. Squares just float around like yours do, while other shapes chase or shoot bullets.
